UN Human Rights monitors record 36 civilian deaths in Donbas in past three months

Thirty-six civilians were killed in Donbas hostilities in eastern Ukraine in the past three months, according to an UN report released on Tuesday, June 13, Joinfo.com reports with reference to UNIAN.

“The report covers the period from 16 February to 15 May 2017, during which the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) recorded 36 conflict-related civilian deaths and 157 injuries – a 48 per cent increase on the previous reporting period from 16 November 2016 to 15 February 2017,” the UN Resident Coordinator in Ukraine said in a statement, citing the report.

“There were daily ceasefire violations and routine use of small arms and light and heavy weapons in the conflict zone. Such attacks and the resulting damage to critical infrastructure, including schools, hospitals and water facilities, raise serious concerns for the protection of civilians, the report notes. The report warns that, as summer approaches, there is a risk of further escalation in hostilities, as in previous years,” it said.

As it was reported earlier, residential areas in the Ukrainian-controlled towns of Avdiyivka and Krasnohorivka in Donetsk region are under constant enemy fire. In particular, Russia’s hybrid military forces launched several barrages from 125mm tank guns to attack a residential quarter in the town of Avdiyivka on June 12.

Shells exploded near private houses on Ostrovskoho and Gagarina Streets. Fortunately, there were no civilian casualties. The circumstances and consequences of this incident are now being clarified. Another attack on local residents’ houses on the same day was recorded near the village of Zaitseve where a heavy machine gun was used.

The U.S. Embassy in Ukraine has called on Russian-controlled militants in Donbas via Twitter to stop shelling civilian infrastructure facilities in the region.

“Stop targeting civilian infrastructure,” the embassy tweeted on June 12. U.S. diplomats also called on Russian-controlled militants to comply with the Minsk peace agreements.

New pipeline to provide gas to eastern Ukraine Avdiyivka

The construction of a new gas pipeline has started in Donetsk region to provide this fuel to Avdiivka, the cost of the construction is UAH 59 million, according to Ukrinform.

Chairman of Donetsk Regional Military and Civilian Administration Pavlo Zhebrivsky informed this on his Facebook page on Tuesday.

“We are starting the construction of a new gas pipeline through which the city of Avdiivka will receive gas from the territory controlled by Ukraine … The construction costs UAH 59 million,” the head of the region wrote.

Zhebrivsky recalled that the city of Avdiivka remained without gas for six days after the militants once again damaged the old gas pipeline.

One Ukrainian soldier killed, 5 wounded amid 57 enemy attacks on Monday

Russia’s hybrid military forces attacked Ukrainian army positions in Donbas 57 times in the past 24 hours, with one Ukrainian soldier reported as killed and five as wounded in action, according to the press service of the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) Headquarters, Joinfo.com reports with reference to UNIAN.

“They include five instances when the mercenaries were directly aiming at residential areas. Most of the attacks were mounted by the occupiers after dark,” the ATO HQ said on Tuesday, June 13.

Russian proxies used proscribed 152mm artillery systems in the Mariupol sector to shell areas near the villages of Hrafske and Olhynka at the beginning of the previous day. They resorted to infantry fighting vehicles and grenade launchers to attack the town of Maryinka at about 22:00 Kyiv time on June 12.

As a result of the attack, a fire broke out in a house on Zhovtneva Street. Fortunately, none of the local residents was injured. “Yesterday, the militants used mortars of various calibers against the Ukrainian positions near the villages of Pavlopil and Chermalyk, and the town of Mar’inka. In the same area, as well as near the villages of Shyrokyne, Vodiane, Talakivka, Hnutove, and Berezove, the occupiers repeatedly attacked the Ukrainian soldiers. They used grenade launchers and small arms of various calibers.

As was the case before, the Kremlin-backed mercenaries launched several barrages from 125mm tank guns to attack a residential quarter in Avdiyivka. Shells exploded near private houses on Ostrovskoho and Gagarina Streets. Fortunately, there were no civilian casualties. The circumstances and consequences of this incident are now being clarified. Another attack on local residents’ houses yesterday was recorded near the village of Zaitseve where a heavy machine gun was used.
