Militants attack Ukraine 30 times on May 8 in Donbas

Russia’s hybrid military forces attacked Ukrainian army positions in Donbas 30 times on May 8 with one Ukrainian soldier reported as killed in action and five as wounded in action, the press service of the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) Headquarters reports, according to UNIAN.

In the Donetsk sector, the enemy fired 120mm and 82mm mortars on the Ukrainian fortified positions near the villages of Verkhniotoretske and Kam’ianka. They also used 120mm mortars against the defenders of the village of Nevelske, as well as grenade launchers of various systems and heavy machine guns against the defenders of the villages of Luhanske and Verkhniotoretske. The Ukrainian positions near the town of Avdiyivka came under fire from 120mm mortars, anti-tank grenade launchers and heavy machine guns, while the Ukrainian fortified positions near the village of Zaitseve were attacked with grenade launchers of various calibers and small arms.

In the Mariupol sector, the Russian occupation forces shelled 120mm and 82mm mortars, grenade launchers of various systems and small arms on the Ukrainian positions near the village of Pavlopil. The occupiers also opened fire from 82mm mortars, infantry fighting vehicles, grenade launchers and heavy machine guns on the Ukrainian Marines’ fortified positions near the village of Vodiane. The militants used 120mm and 82mm mortars against the defenders of the town of Krasnohorivka, as well as grenade launchers of various systems against the defenders of the villages of Shyrokyne, Hnutove and Chermalyk. Moreover, the enemy fired small arms on the Ukrainian fortified positions near the village of Hranitne. Enemy snipers were also active near the village of Novotroyitske.

In the Luhansk sector, the Russian-backed mercenaries shelled 122mm artillery systems on the fortified positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near the village of Novozvanivka. The enemy also used 120mm mortars and automatic grenade launchers near the village of Krymske, while 82mm mortars were used to attack the Ukrainian fortified positions near the village of Troyitske. Furthermore, the militants fired grenade launchers of various systems and heavy machine guns on the Ukrainian positions near the village of Zhovte.

Eurovision 2017: Opening events in Kyiv held without violation of public order

The events on the occasion of the opening of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kyiv were held without violation of public order, Joinfo.com reports with reference to Ukrinform.

The National Police of Ukraine informed this on Twitter.

“The events on the occasion of the opening of Eurovision 2017 were held without violation of public order,” the report said.

The department also reported on the resumption of traffic movement in the central part of the capital.

As reported, In Kyiv, the official opening ceremony of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 was held in the Parkovy Exhibition and Congress Centre on Sunday evening.

The Eurovision semifinals will be held on May 9 and 11 and the final – on May 13.

U.S. Congress approves appropriations act with $560 mln assistance for Ukraine

The U.S. Congress has approved the 2017 consolidated appropriations act allotting at least $560 million of assistance to Ukraine, the Ukrainian embassy to the United States has said, Joinfo.com reports with reference to Interfax-Ukraine.

“Ukraine highly values the bilateral support of the United States Congress! The Senate and House of Representatives have passed the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2017 under which not less than $560 mln. shall be made available for assistance for Ukraine. The bill is now headed to the U.S. President for signature,” the embassy said on its Facebook page.

The document envisages the total sum of assistance to Ukraine in the amount of at least $560.465 million, including $410.465 million to be sent to various assistance programs and $150 million under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative.

The U.S. Congress also approved the allocation of military assistance to Ukraine in the amount of $150 million. The document says that these funds will be available to the Pentagon in order to provide Ukraine with military support, including, in particular, the provision of lethal weapons of defensive character and equipment, logistics support, intelligence support of the Ukrainian army and national security forces, training of Ukrainian armed forces personnel and other programs.
