Chief of the Kyiv office of the Ukrainian National Police department Andriy Kryshchenko announces that
the man killed in Kyiv had been identified as a former Russian State Duma deputy, Joinfo.com reports with reference to 112 Ukraine TV channel.
Another former Russian State Duma deputy Ilya Ponomaryov, who is in Kyiv, said on Facebook that Voronenkov was on his way to a meeting with him while he was shot and killed in central Kyiv.
“Denis Voronenkov was killed near Premier Palace Hotel at 11:25 a.m. local time. He was on his way to a meeting with me. I am left speechless. The bodyguard managed to wound the attacker,” Ponomaryov said.
Media report that the killer was detained and transported to a hospital.
Denis Voronenkov was an important witness in a case against the fugitive former president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych who is suspected of a high treason and asking Russian President Vladimir Putin to send Russian troops to Ukraine.
He moved to Ukraine with his family and received a Ukrainian citizenship.
The investigation is underway.
