Another former Russian State Duma deputy Ilya Ponomaryov, who is in Kyiv, said on Facebook that Voronenkov was on his way to a meeting with him while he was shot and killed in central Kyiv.

“Denis Voronenkov was killed near Premier Palace Hotel at 11:25 a.m. local time. He was on his way to a meeting with me. I am left speechless. The bodyguard managed to wound the attacker,” Ponomaryov said.

Media report that the killer was detained and transported to a hospital.

Denis Voronenkov was an important witness in a case against the fugitive former president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych who is suspected of a high treason and asking Russian President Vladimir Putin to send Russian troops to Ukraine.

He moved to Ukraine with his family and received a Ukrainian citizenship.
