European Parliament Committee votes for visa waivers for Ukraine
The European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs has voted for the wording of a legislative act on a visa-free regime for Ukraine that was agreed upon in the framework of inter-institutional negotiations, according to an UNIAN correspondent in Brussels, Joinfo.com reports.
The voting took place at a Committee meeting in Brussels on Thursday, March 9. The decision was supported by 39 Committee members, while four voted against it and one abstained.
The wording of the legislative act was agreed upon following the trialogue and sealed in a letter of the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union of March 3.
The act is titled “Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Regulation (EC) No 539/2001 listing the third countries whose nationals must be in possession of visas when crossing the external borders and those whose nationals are exempt from that requirement (Ukraine).”
Now the document should be put to the vote at a European Parliament plenary session.
EU ambassadors on March 2, 2017, confirmed, on behalf of the Council of the European Union, the informal agreement reached on February 28, 2017, between the Maltese Presidency and the European Parliament on visa liberalization for Ukrainians.
French investors increase activity in Ukraine – Foreign Minister
The bilateral economic turnover between Ukraine and France has increased by 36%, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said at a joint briefing with French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, Joinfo.com reports with reference to Ukrinform.
“If we look at our bilateral economic turnover, we will see that it has increased by 36%. And this means that our businessmen are working together, and in particular, this shows that the free trade zone between Ukraine and the EU is working,” he said.
Klimkin has stressed that the French investors began to work actively in Ukraine. Thus, according to the minister, most of new jobs in our country have been created with the help of French investments.
As reported, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin pays a two-day working visit to France.
It should be recalled that Klimkin attended a Tuesday hearing “On Russian Policies and Intentions Toward Specific European Countries” at the Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs of the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations, during his two-day visit to Washington.
Militants launched 69 attacks on Ukrainian troops in Donbas on Wednesday
Russia’s hybrid military forces attacked Ukrainian army positions in Donbas 69 times in the past 24 hours, according to the press service of the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) Headquarters, Joinfo.com reports with reference to UNIAN.
“The town of Mar’inka, and the villages of Chermalyk and Pavlopil in the Mariupol sector came under mortar fire, while grenade launchers were used to attack the villages of Vodiane and Hnutove. The enemy also used grenade launchers, heavy machine guns and small arms to fire on the villages of Lebedynske, Pavlopil, Novohryhorivka, Hnutove, and Shyrokyne. Additionally, Shyrokyne, Vodiane and Hnutove were attacked by infantry fighting vehicles. Furthermore, a sniper was active in the village of Novotroitske,” the report says.
In the Donetsk sector, the invaders repeatedly used banned 122mm artillery systems to shell the village of Zaitseve. “The town of Avdiyivka, and the villages of Verkhniotoretske, Maiorsk, Novhorodske, and Luhanske came under mortar fire, while grenade launchers and heavy machine guns were used to shell the villages of Verkhniotoretske, Pisky, Nevelske, Kam’ianka, Novoluhanske, Novhorodske, Troitske, and Zaitseve. Moreover, Zaitseve and Novhorodske came under sniper fire,” the headquarters said.
In the Luhansk sector, the occupiers used banned 120mm mortars to shell the town of Popasna, and the villages of Novo-Oleksandrivka and Troitske, as well as small arms were fired on the villages of Krymske and Stanytsia Luhanska. “Being on duty at the forefront yesterday, our servicemen spotted an enemy sniper group. One sniper was killed,” the report said.
