Ukraine news today as of January 7, 2017: Orthodox world celebrates Christmas on the night of January 7:

On the night of January 7, all Ukrainian Orthodox churches started celebrating Christmas, Joinfo.com reports with reference to UNIAN.

The discrepancy in the date of the celebration of Christmas by the western and eastern churches is due to the fact that they use different calendar systems. The Orthodox Church celebrates Christmas on January 7 (December 25, by the old calendar), while the Catholic Church celebrates it on December 25 on the Gregorian calendar.

Ukrainian Christmas traditions include a lot of rituals and customs like caroling сostume parades with chants and songs. Koliada is a hymn to Christ, chanting his birth. Shchedrivky songs glorify nature, inviting spring.

Conflict in Ukraine: MP Nadiya Savchenko intends to publish lists of POWs and missing in Donbas:

“Lists of prisoners of war and missing persons, which I received as a result of the meeting in Minsk, and have collected from the time I was released from Russian captivity I will make public in the near future,” – she wrote on her Facebook page.

Earlier it was reported that Savchenko secretly met with the leaders of the self-proclaimed republics in Minsk.

The Ukrainian Security Service will talk to Savchenko in order to prevent publication of these lists.

“Naturally, we know these lists. We are working with these lists. I can only say that there are certain laws that limit the leakage of any information related to personal data […] We should not use this information for some selfish goals, should not manipulate these lists, engage in political campaigning,” the SBU chief’s adviser, Yuriy Tandit, said on TV on Saturday.
