“Russia’s Defense Ministry is starting to downsize the grouping of the armed forces in Syria,” the Chief of the General Staff Gen. Valery Gerasimov said, according to TASS news agency.

A group of warships led by the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier will be the first to leave the conflict area, he said.

The Admiral Kuznetsov carrier will leave the Mediterranean on Friday and head to Severomorsk in Russia’s northern Murmansk region, Gerasimov said.

Russia is reducing its military deployment in Syria under the ceasefire agreement as of December 30, 2016, between the Syrian government and opposition.
