Situation in eastern Ukraine today 4th January 2017:
Militants have continued shelling on positions of Ukraine’s Armed Forces in all sectors of the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) area. They fired 32 times as of 18:00 local time. One Ukrainian serviceman has been wounded in the Donetsk region, according to ATO headquarters report.
“In the Donetsk sector, militants conducted shelling with 120- and 82-mm mortars on the villages of Troitske and Zaitseve, with grenade launchers and small arms – on Luhganske, Avdiyivka and Kruta Balka. One of our soldier was wounded,” – said the headquarters.
In the Luhansk sector, militants fired from 120-millimeter mortars on Novozvanivka village, and with grenade launchers – on the villages of Novooleksandrivka and Stanytsia Luhanska.
The militants also repeatedly fired mortars on the villages of Vodiane, Shyrokyne, used grenade launchers and small arms to fire on Hnutove, Shyrokyne, Talakivka, Pavlopil. The invaders also fired from an infantry combat vehicle on Shyrokyne.
Ukrainska Pravda: Ukrainian court rules to arrest oligarch Serhiy Kurchenko in absentia:
Kyiv Pechersk district court has ruled to arrest in absentia oligarch Serhiy Kurchenko, ally of ex-president Viktor Yanukovych, according to Ukrainska Pravda edition.
According to Kurchenko’s lawyer Yuri Sukhov, the court announced on Tuesday a decision to detain the oligarch as a preventive measure. Sukhov said that he will challenge the decision in appeal.
It should be recalled that on March 22, 2016, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office announced the fugitive Ukrainian oligarch Serhiy Kurchenko a suspect for financial crimes.
PGO has previously announced Kurchenko a suspect in the case of embezzlement of the property of state enterprise JSC “Ukrgazvydobuvannya.” The court has also arrested Kurchenko’s property in May, 2016.
Ukraine news today: Indictment against Ukrainian official, who ordered to break up Maidan, filed to court:
The indictment against the former Chief of the Public Security Department of Kyiv Police, who is accused of breaking up the Maidan protests on 30 November 2013, has been transferred to the court.
The official is charged for ordering to storm the protesters tent camp on the Maidan Square in central Kyiv, resulting in more than 80 injured activists.
He is also charged for giving instructions to the special forces to obstruct rallies on December 1, 2013 on Bankova Street. He also faces charges for giving permission to use physical force and special means to protesters and journalists, that resulted in injuries to more than 29 protesters and 22 media representatives.
PGO has also charged 5 the then top state officials and 5 law enforcement officers of using force against rallies participants in Kyiv on December 1, 2013.
A pre-trial investigation, aimed at establishing other organizers and perpetrators of crimes committed during these events, continues.
Six people died of flu in Ukraine last week:
According to Ukraine’s Health Ministry, three people died of flu in Lviv region and three people in Poltava, Mykolaiv and Zaporizhia regions during the week from 25 December 2016 to 1 January 2017.
The Center of Influenza and Acute Respiratory Viral Infections indicated that 369,151 people fell ill of influenza and SARS during the week, 57.8% of them – children under 17 years.
The highest number of patients were registered in Kyiv region, the lowest – in Luhansk region.
The trend is decreasing, experts attribute this to the New Year holidays and vacations in schools, according to the ministry.
The epidemic threshold has been overcome in 21 regions of Ukraine and Kyiv city.
