Putin says ceasefire agreed in Syria for midnight

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that agreements have been achieved on a ceasefire in Syria and the readiness to start peace talks, according to the Russian TASS agency.

“Reports have just arrived that several hours ago there was a development that we all have looked and worked for so long. Three documents have been signed. A ceasefire between the Syrian government and the armed opposition is the one. A package of measures to control the ceasefire is the other. There is also a declaration of readiness to enter peace talks on Syrian conflict settlement,” Putin said at a meeting with Russian foreign and defense ministers.

Putin called the agreements “fragile” and said they will demand “special attention and assistance” for further development.

The Syrian news agency Sana also reported that the army command declared a comprehensive cessation of hostilities across all the territories of the country starting at 00:00 on the night of December 29-30.

The report says also that the Jabhat al-Nusra organization and ISIS “and the groups affiliated to them are excluded from the agreement.”

It should be recalled that Turkey and Russia agreed on a ceasefire plan in Syria, as media reported on Tuesday.
