Militant of separatist armed group detained in western Ukraine

Ukraine’s State Security Service (SBU) arrested a militant of the Vostok terrorist group of the so-called “Donetsk People’s Republic” in a village in western Ternopil region. The militant has worked for a local company as a guard.

According to the SBU press service, the arrested militant of the Vostok terrorist group, who fought for the “DPR”, is a native of Donetsk region. He voluntarily joined the illegal armed group in August 2014 and was the head of crew of a “Nona” mortar artillery system, Joinfo.ua reports.

The detained has been fighting until March 2016. The SBU investigators have documented his participation in the shelling on positions of the Ukraine’s Armed Forces in the Donetsk airport, near the towns of Khartsyzsk, Makiyivka and Snizhne.

At the end of Spring, having realized the hopelessness of the future of the “Republic” and fearing for his life, the militant returned to the territory controlled by the Ukrainian authorities. He was hiding in several regions of Ukraine, trying to find a job. He worked as a guard at the company in one of the villages in Podvolochisk, Ternopil region in western Ukraine.

During a joint operation by the SBU officers of Zhytomyr and Ternopil regions, the militant was detained at the workplace.

A man has been charged of committing a crime under Part 1 of Art. 258-3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The pre-trial investigation is underway.
