Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Olena Zerkal said that Ukraine has rejected the proposed candidate for the ambassador of the Russian Federation, Joinfo.ua reports.
According to her, the appointment of a new ambassador “was removed from the agenda” at the initiative of Ukraine. “At least the way it was proposed, it was removed from the agenda,” Zerkal said.
According to the deputy minister, the absence of the Russian ambassador in Ukraine will not affect the development of relations between the two countries.
“We also are limited in scope of the normal operation in the Russian Federation, so I think it will have no effect, given that the role of the former Ambassador of the Russian Federation in shaping relations was minimal”, – said Zerkal.
Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov, asked to comment on Zerkal’s statement said that he “has nothing to add to what has been said before.”
On July 29, Russia has asked Ukraine’s prior consent to the appointment of Ambassador Mikhail Babich.
Former Russian Ambassador to Ukraine Mikhail Zurabov was dismissed on July 28. He held this post since 2009. Later it became known that the State Duma introduced the candidacy of presidential envoy in the Volga Federal District Mikhail Babich.
Ukraine recalled its ambassador to Russia Volodymyr Yelchenko for consultations in March 2015. In December, he was appointed Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations. The new ambassador has not been appointed.
