ATO authorities close checkpoint in Zaitseve due to increased shelling by separatists

Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) command decided to close the checkpoint in the village of Zaitseve, Donetsk region, in order not to endanger civilians in the situation of increasing shelling by pro-Russian mercenaries, Joinfo.ua reports with reference to the ATO press center.

During the past days, Russia-backed mercenaries increased shelling on the village of Zaitseve. In addition to grenade launchers, heavy machine guns and small arms, the insurgents attack positions of the ATO forces using 82mm and 120 mm mortars, the use of which is prohibited by the Minsk agreements.

Yesterday, February 1, ATO authorities, through the Ukrainian representatives of the Joint Center for Control and Co-ordination (JCCC), notified the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission about the decision to close the checkpoint in Zaitseve.

The ATO command said also in the statement, that they must admit the unfortunate fact that the representatives of the OSCE SMM do not respond to increasing attacks of the members of the illegal pro-Russian gangs on the positions of the ATO forces in Zaytseve and other towns. Thus, by inaction, the representatives of the OSCE SMM share, for some extent, the responsibility for militants’ attacks on Zaitseve, for closing of the checkpoint in Zaitseve and the escalation of the conflict in Donbas.
