On November 6, at the Russian embassy in Kyiv activists held a peaceful rally against the Russian repressions against Crimean Tatars and Ukrainians in Crimea. At the center of the event was a flash mob named “Peninsula of Fear”, Joinfo.ua reports with the reference to KrymRealii.
Protesters demanded the creation of the United Nations international monitoring mission on human rights in Crimea. During the flash mob “Peninsula of Fear”, the participants stood in silence with covered faces, demonstrating intimidation and pressure on freedom of speech in annexed Crimea.
The event was attended by members of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars, representatives of the displaced Crimeans, Crimean Tatar social activists, journalists.
It should be recalled thay on November 2, Russian Investigation Committee in Crimea began searches in the homes of former employees of the Crimean Tatar TV Channel ATR in the frame of initiated criminal case against Lenur Islyamov, the owner of the channel. Islyamov believes that it is “a revenge for not accepting Putin’s game rules in Crimea.”
Among the requirements of the protesters were “De-occupation of the Crimea – on the agenda of the United Nations”, “Freedom for political prisoners”, “Yes to civilian blockade of Crimea”. The declaration of the event was voiced by Emine Dzheppar, the Adviser to the Minister of Information Policy of Ukraine for Crimea.
Behind the protesters were flowers, that Kyiv citizens brought to the Russian embassy to express solidarity and sorrow for the victims of the Russians plane crashed in Egypt.
Mustafa Dzhemilev, the former head of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars, along with the acting Chairman Refat Chubarov were present at the action. They expressed their opinions in the video below.
