At least 43 people killed, 8 injured in a head-on collision of a bus and a truck with timber. The tragedy happened about 07:30 local time (05:30 GMT), at a dangerous bend in the road. Both vehicles burst in flames after the crash. Two people, including a young boy, died in the truck. It is the worst road crash in France for more than 30 years, Joinfo.ua reports with the reference to Reuters.
About 50 pensioners on the bus were on a day trip to the Bearn region from their homes in the village of Petit Palais and the neighborhood . The crash happened soon after departure.
Video on French television showed two blackened vehicles, with the bus facing the wood-transporter’s trailer, its cab skewed to one side.
France’s President Francois Hollande promised a full investigation into what he called an “immense tragedy”.
Prime Minister Manuel Valls, speaking from the scene, said the victims had died “in atrocious conditions”.
“It’s a terrible shock for France,” he added.
