Donetsk city court of the Rostov region of Russia has decided to reject the petition of the defense of Ukrainian pilot, MP and member of the PACE to let her sister Vira Savchenko testify as a defense witness at the hearing, Joinfo.ua reports.
Nadiya Savchenko, Ukrainian pilot, was captured in Donbas in June 2014, illegally transported to the Russian Federation, imprisoned by the Kremlin and accused of alleged involvement in the death of Russian journalists in Donbas. The lawyers of Nadiya Savchenko filed the relevant appeal to the court asking to let Vira testify as a defense witness.
“This week Vera Savchenko crossed the state border in the Russian village Gukovo, and she is now in Donetsk (Rostov region, Russia – Joinfo.ua), but we have no assurance that, if she would return to Ukraine, the Russian authorities would let her to enter Russia again”, – said the lawyer Ilya Novikov.
Because of this, he asked the court to change the order of examination of evidence, and question her as a defense witness.
The Court dismissed the appeal, considering it premature, and began to question the next prosecution witness, one of the militants.
Earlier, the lawyer of Nadiya Savchenko, illegally imprisoned by the Kremlin and accused of alleged involvement in the death of Russian journalists in Donbas, Mark Feigin said that her sister Vira was banned on entry into the territory of the Russian Federation until 2020. “At the checkpoint Cherkovo-Melove on the of Russian-Ukrainian border Vira Savchenko was informed that the FSB has banned her entry into the Russian Federation”, – he said.
Feigin also suggested that the reason for ban is a “threat to national security”, and assured that he would protest the decision of the FSB, because Nadiya Savchenko is now devoid of the right to defense, as her sister was declared the sole witness at the trial.”
According to the lawyer Ilya Savchenko, the defense will use this decision of the Russian security services as an advantage.
