During the talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi the Defense Minister of Saudi Arabia Mohammad bin Salman Al Saud said that Russian military intervention into the Syrian conflict would have “dangerous consequences”, Joinfo.ua with the reference to Russian media and Reuters.
The Prince added that during the meeting Saudi Arabia insisted that Russia has to join the already existing coalition against terrorism. The Saudi authorities believe that the actions of Russia in Syria will draw it into the war between communities and will attract new extremists to Syria.
He also added that Saudi Arabia will continue to support the Syrian moderate opposition. Prince also confirmed the unchanged position on the fate of President Bashar Assad: one of the conditions for a peaceful settlement in Syria is Assad’s resignation.
According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the sides discussed the possible steps for reaching of the political settlement in Syria. The Saudi Foreign Minister, in turn, expressed his concerns about the operation of Russia in Syria. Saudi Arabia called for a political solution in Syria on the basis of the Geneva Communique and with the help of the Transitional Government with the participation of representatives of the regime and the opposition.
Saudi Arabia was among the seven countries which in early October called on Russia to stop air strikes on Syrian opposition. Then the Turkish Foreign Ministry issued a joint statement on behalf of the U.S., the UK, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
