Nobel prize 2015 in literature goes to Belarusian journalist Svetlana Alexievich. Alexievich – author of popular books about the Chechen war, Chernobyl, hard period of 1990-1999 and World War II through the eyes of women. It documentally-artistic method is based on interviews with real people, witnesses of the events, Joinfo.ua reports with the reference to The Guardian.

As noted, Alexievich awarded for her work as “a monument to suffering and courage in our time”.

It should be noted that the writer originally from Ivano-Frankivsk.

Since the prize was first awarded in 1901, there were only 13 women out of 111 laureates nominated. The last woman to win, Canada’s Alice Munro, was handed the award in 2013. In 2013 Alexievich was one of the main contenders. The writer is in opposition to the regime of Berarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko. She lives and works outside Berarus, from Germany – to Italy, Sweden.

The literature prize is the fourth of the Nobel prizes annually awarded by the Swedish committee before attention switches to Norway on Friday for the announcement of the peace prize.

Earlier three scientists have been jointly awarded the Nobel Prize 2015 in medicine for discovering new drugs against parasitic diseases. Half of the award goes to William Campbell Ireland and Satoshi Omura from Japan for discovering avermectin, a derivative of which has been used to treat hundreds of millions of people suffering from parasitic diseases, such as river blindness and elephantiasis
