The head of the Russian Federation Council revealed plans in Syria: regime protection, decentralization, elections

Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko appealed to countries interested in the fight against terrorism, to join some “Russian coalition”, reports Joinfo.ua with the reference to Izvestia.

“Russia calls to form a broad anti-terrorist coalition, whose actions will be consistent with international law and consistent with the decisions of the UN Security Council,”- Matvienko said at the meeting with Abderraouf Ar Ravabdoy, the President of the Senate of the National Assembly of Jordan during the official visit of the Russian delegation to Amman.

“We strongly condemn flirting with terrorists, we strongly condemn the overthrowning of unwanted regimes by the hands of terrorists. This should be an internal issue of a country,” – said Matvienko.

She said that the reforms aimed to the decentralization of power and elections could be the solution.

“Western countries consider the overthrowing of Bashar Assad as a priority, but we believe the main target is to defeat ISIS, along with reforms and giving the Syrian people the right vote on elections and decide, who should lead Syria. But not to forcefully overthrow the current head of state.

“Well, supposed Assad is toppled and who will take over? The terrorists will take the empty place immediately. We can see what happened in Iraq and Libya, “- said Mativenko.

However, she said that the policies of Western countries led to disasters in a number of Middle Eastern countries.

“ISIS did not rise by itself but as a result of flirting with terrorist organizations, which destroyed Iraq, Libya. And now they try to do it in Syria. Meanwhile, ISIS really pose a threat to the world community, including Russia, “- she said.

“Russia does not have any other political goals, but to make a substantial contribution to the defeating of ISIS” – added Matvienko.

It ahould be recalled that Russia has been conducting airstrikes in Syria since September 30, 2015. That day the Federal Council of the State Duma of the Russian Federation supported by 162 votes the Resolution on the use of Russian Armed Forces outside the territory of Russia, introduced by the President Vladimir Putin. As Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said: “At the request of the Syrian government, we’re helping them to fight ISIS and other terrorist groups.”

After first strikes Syrian opposition stated that Russians bomb not ISIS-controlled areas but opposition’ facilities, residential areas and even the hospital. U.S. and allies accused Russia on targeting not just ISIS but other groups opposed to Bashar Assad’s regime.

Later Turkish Foreign Ministry published a joint declaration, in which seven countries – Turkey, the United States, Germany, Britain, France, Qatar and Saudi Arabia – called on Russia to cease to bomb Syria.

And yesterday Syrian rebels fighting against President Bashar Assad in a joint statement called on regional countries to form an alliance against Russia and Iran.
