According to the French Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet, at least sixteen people died after heavy rains and severe flood in French Riviera, including three people who drowned in a retirement home after the river Brague broke its banks, Joinfo.ua reports with the reference to The Guardian.

The French president, Francois Hollande, said in a statement that people were found dead in the towns of Cannes, Biot, Golfe-Juan and Mandelieu-La Napoule in the south-east.

Five people were killed in the town of Mandelieu-la-Napoule when trying to park your car in the underground parking lot. Three residents drowned in the city of Vallauris on the French Riviera – their car got stuck in the tunnel opposite the City railway station.

Another fatality was recorded in Cannes, where the drowned 60-year-old woman. The city declared a state of emergency.

Guardian journalist Stuart Dredge said that “Cannes probably got off lightly, comparably” and he “didn’t feel in true danger.”

One social media user compared the scenes in Cannes on Sunday morning to the zombie TV series The Walking Dead, posting pictures of several damaged cars.

French weather forecasters said the worst storms had now passed over the French mainland and were headed for the Italian coast.
