President Poroshenko to coordinate actions with other countries “to force” Russia to implement Minsk Agreements

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko arrived in the U.S. for participation in the 70th session of the UN General Assembly. The President said Ukraine will make decisive steps to protect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. He also stated he will propose changes aimed to restore the historic mission of the UN Security Council

Upon arrival in New York, President Poroshenko said to the journalists that Ukraine will make decisive steps to protect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. The President also stated he will propose changes aimed to restore the historic mission of the UN Security Council as a mechanism to protect global security, Joinfo.ua reports with the reference to the AP press service.

Responding to questions from the media, the President said: “After the annexation of Crimea and aggression in the Donbas, when one of the countries – permanent members of the UN Security Council blocks the actions and instruments of the Security Council, we have to either increase the efficiency or build other security mechanisms.” President also added that this initiative was supported by many other countries.

The President noted that all international contacts within the framework of the General Assembly will be devoted to ensuring a strong Transatlantic unity and solidarity with Ukraine. “The question of the annexation of Crimea, aggression in the Donbas, sanctions against Russia, well-coordinated actions to force Russia fulfill the Minsk Agreements today remains the first priority of all our partners,” – the President emphasized.

Commenting on the allegations of some media that Ukraine can become a bargaining chip in negotiations the U.S. and Russia on the Syrian issue, the President said: “This is part of Russia’s information war against Ukraine and against the civilized world – to show that the world is allegedly tired of Ukraine.” The President referred to the statements of representatives and leaders of some countries about the top priority of Ukraine. “We effective coordinate of our actions to ensure the implementation of the Minsk Agreements, to prevent the fake elections Russia plans to hold in October and November, and to take steps in response, if these elections take place. We must force Russia to return to the negotiating table and do everything possible for immediate implementation of the Minsk Agreements.”

It should be added that President Poroshenko will meet with U.S. President Barack Obama on the sidelines of UN General Assembly.
