7 Reasons russian army is not so frightening

Shortage of supplies, men, vehicles and heavy losses. Despite what Putin says about russian army, it's not that powerful.
Russian army is not that powerful

Intimidation is used as a magic tool for budgets and sales expansion. The Russian army is actually very different from the picture that they paint, mako.co.il reports. They are light years away from the combat capability of the US Army, China, Germany and France. Of course, one should not go to the other extreme, it is still not South Sudan and Somalia. The Russian army has a huge number of nuclear warheads, beautiful aircraft, tanks and excellent silent submarines. But, as you’ll learn, it still is not as terrible as it seems.

1. Many victims and poor discipline

The reasons for this are many, and low level of discipline in the Russian army is apparent, which is reflected in their combat effectiveness and even the quality of the exercise. Veterans mock recruits, ceremonies to mark the completion of the courses are more like tortures of the Inquisition, and it is only a small part that is known to the public. Two years ago in the framework of the national anti-smoking campaign, it was decided to stop the distribution of free cigarettes to the soldiers, but the chief of staff warned that the result could be a riot.

2. No money in the treasury

Although the Russian military budget has been greatly increased, it is far from wealthy US defense spending, and the financial position of the Russian armed forces is poor. The Russian military budget amounts to $80-90 bln., the US – $500 billion, Chinese – more than $100 bln. German – $50-60 bln.

3. SHortage of soldiers

For many years russian authorities are discussing the possibility of moving to a fully mercenary army like in the United States. Currently the country has a compulsory military service, and the service life is from one to two years, unless the recruit doe has money or connections. But the problem is that for the above reasons, the Russian army is experiencing great difficulties in attracting contractors, especially from high-quality sectors of the population.

4. Airplanes fall from the sky

In the last two years we have witnessed a resumption of operations, known since the days of Cold War reconnaissance aircraft along the air borders of Western countries and a number of their ships. However, it should be noted that the state of the Russian Air Force is so bad that planes often simply fall and break. The last case was last week, he crashed during an air parade.

Although Russia has a wonderful aircraft, most of the aircraft make already obsolete MiG-29 and Su-27, which have not passed such modernization as parallel to them the F-15 and F-16.

5. The only aircraft carrier, not too impressive
The US Navy currently has 11 Attack aircraft carriers and eight helicopter no less perfect. Such ships have France, Italy and even India. The Russian Navy has one aircraft carrier, not in the best condition, which, moreover, needs refueling every month or two, in contrast to the US aircraft carrier with nuclear power plants.

6. The tank against tank

The Russian army has not less than 10 thousand tanks, and three thousand of them on active service. About half of them are T-72, obsolete and not meeting Western standards. There is a new tank, the T-90, but in only 300 troops and the slow speed of deliveries. The US tanks is less than about 5000, but all of them – different versions of the M-1 Abrams. If you add the Marine Corps, this number will increase by a few hundred.

7. Accidents at parades show all

The Russian army likes to show its strength and its citizens around the world in military parades. If we look carefully at these parades, we see the same thing as described above – accidents and disasters, the death of a soldier, a plane crash, the explosion of the tank. As we have said, just this week the parade plane crashed and killed the pilot. Last month, the eyes of the public saw the accident which occurred at the start of a rocket from the ship.
