The wall on the Latvian-Russian border will help to fight against illegal migrants from Central Asia and the Far East. It was stated by Rihards Kozlovskis, the Latvian Minister of Internal Affairs, Joinfo.ua reports referring to Radio Poland.
“Latvia needs four years and 17 million euros in order to fence itself from Russia,” he said.
Kozlovskis said that Latvia should build a wall on the border with Russia “to strengthen its border.” According to the head of the Latvian Ministry of Internal Affairs, it is a reaction to the growing wave of migrants.
Thus, according to the Latvian services, in 2015 alone, on the border have been detained 239 illegal migrants, 160 out of them came from Vietnam and 20 – from Afghanistan.
As it turns out, for small Latvia, several hundred mifrants are a problem. Despite this, the European Commission, which is struggling with the wave of migrants and refugees from Africa and the Middle East in the Mediterranean region, appealed to the governments of the EU member states, including Latvia, with a request to host some part of migrants, who now reside in Italy and Greece.
