President Vladimir Putin maintains his power at expense of war with Ukraine – ex-Prime Minister

The Russian President Vladimir Putin needs this war to maintain his power. Such an opinion was expressed by an opposition leader and former Prime Minister of Russia Mikhail Kasyanov.

According to Kasyanov, President Vladimir Putin both needs and does not need this war, but the fighting allows him to keep the Russian population under control, Joinfo.ua reports with reference to Ukrayinska Pravda.

“Putin has a dilemma – on the one hand, he does not want war and problems in the economy, and he does not want to respond to sanctions, on the other hand, he needs war to maintain his power. How? The effect of mobilization,” he believes.

The former Prime Minister notes that the external enemy for the Russian Federation is the U.S. and the EU, and a set of explanations for the population is simple: “We are defending ourselves, everyone go in trenches, side by side, we are under attack, they want to deprive us of oil and gas, sovereignty, and to enslave us.”

At the same time, Kasyanov believes that this situation can not last long, and the next year Putin will have to fix his position towads Ukraine, since the Russian economy will not sustain.

He notes that Putin is angry and does not understand why the West does not agree to the Russian terms of the solution of the Ukrainian question, in particular – special federalization of the eastern regions, their financing and restoration of Ukraine. Kasyanov is sure that the West will not accept such conditions.

Earlier, we reported that President Vladimir Putin had acquired a powerful friend in the United States. The Republican candidate Donald Trump is confident that if he is elected as the President of the United States, he will be able to find a common language with the Russian leader.
