The authorities of the Republic of Belarus started paying attention to the state border with Ukraine. The reason for this was the increase in trafficking of illegal weapons. It was told by the Acting State Secretary of the Security Council Stanislav Zas, Joinfo.ua reports referring to the Belarusian media.
“We have 1,084 km long border with Ukraine. And it is less developed. And the second thing: we take into account the events that take place in Ukraine. The spread of weapons and ammunition there, including in the areas that border with Belarus,” he said on air of the Belarusian channel ONT.
He stressed that Belarus “closely monitors those events taking olace on the territory of Ukraine.” “Unfortunately, there is a negative trend there so far,” said Zas, adding that “in this situation, we must pay special attention to the border to the south.”
At the same time, according to the representative of the Belarusian authorities, in general, this control was not provoked by any emergency situation. In particular, last year it was carried out in the north-western borders. He stressed that over the past two years, “there has been done a lot of work on the southern borders on increase of the border and its arrangement, demarcation, set-up of new posts, provision of modern engineering equipment.”
“We are not walling off from the brotherly Ukrainian people. On the contrary, our checkpoints are being developed and improved. It is an arrangement of a civilized border between the two countries,”said Zas.
