The founder of the Bellingcat research project, Eliot Higgins, told Otkrytaya Rossiya how any Internet user can verify that the Boeing-777 crash over the Donetsk region involved militants and the Russian military using open information sources, Joinfo.ua reports.

According to him, any Internet user can ensure that the militants using the Russian Buk air defense system are the people responsible for the crash of the Boeing using public information sources.

Eliot Higgins told how he started his own investigation of the disaster. “On the Internet there immediately appeared photos and videos of the crash. Photos were showing the Buk air defense system in different locations of eastern Ukraine.  So we could use geolocation to indicate the exact place of taking these pictures. Also we were able to set a timeline. There are local people who wrote, ‘I saw Buk ADMS moving along the city.’ And it was several hours before MH17 was shot down. Before it became an international event.”
