The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has congratulated the Ukrainians on the 25th anniversary of the proclamation of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine, Joinfo.ua reports with reference to the press service of the Head of State.

According to the President, exactly a quarter of a century ago, on July 16, 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR adopted the Declaration on State Sovereignty of Ukraine, a historical document, which was the forerunner of the Act of Independence of Ukraine adopted a year later.

“The adoption of the Declaration was supported by the overwhelming majority of people’s deputies. 355 representatives of different parliamentary forces expressed their attitude not only to the fateful plan, but also to the main pillars of the future of independent Ukraine. The definition of national borders, which could not be changed without the consent of the people of the country, an opportunity to decide our public lives, and, finally, the declaration of economic independence are the most significant principles laid down in the text of the document,” the statement of the President reads.

Petro Poroshenko noted that at that period of the Soviet history, the Declaration had been an important factor in the consolidation of the Ukrainian Parliament and the people who wanted to change their lives.

“Today, Ukraine is  facing crucial times once again. To go through complex tests of external aggression, to overcome the negative effects of intervention in the internal life of our country by destructive forces, we need unity of political elites and society. The protection of the territorial integrity of the state and the development of peaceful areas of its activity requires maximum commitment of each of us,” the report says.

According to the President, “with common manifestation of political will we have to provide an unshakable legal basis for creation of a modern European state with strong territorial communities and responsible effective managers in the public administration.”

“I believe in wise and heroic Ukrainian people. I am convinced that with  combined efforts we will stand in the fight against the aggressor, change the country, and make our way into the family of developed democratic nations,” Petro Poroshenko summed up.
