During the meeting to be held this week, NATO defense ministers will approve an increase in the NATO Response Force up to 30-40 thousand people. It was announced by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels, Joinfo.ua reports.
"At our defence ministerial this week, we will take new steps to strengthen our collective defence. So we can respond to the challenges even faster and more effectively," he said.
"First, we will take decisions to further increase the strength and the capability of the NATO Response Force. All together, it will amount to between 30,000 and 40,000 troops – more than double its previous size," Stoltenberg said.
According to the Secretary General, the so-called Spearhead Force will become the central element of the enhanced NATO Response Force, whose ground component will be a brigade.
"At the meeting this week, we will approve the air, sea and special forces components of the new Spearhead Force," Jens Stoltenberg said.
