Breaking News: EU extends new sanctions against Russia for another six months without discussion

The decision to extend the new sanctions against Russia for another six months was made today in Luxembourg at the meeting of the EU foreign ministers even without discussion, Joinfo.ua reports with reference to UNIAN.

The European Union made the decision to extend the economic sanctions against Russia until January 31, 2016.

According to a correspondent at UNIAN, the decision was taken without discussion today in Luxembourg at the meeting of the European Council at the level of foreign ministers.

In particular, the sanctions relate to an access to the European financial markets for some Russian banks and companies, to the trade in arms and dual-use goods and export of certain technologies related to the energy sector.

As reported, the extension of economic sanctions against Russia was the result of an agreement between the EU leaders to link the sanctions to the full implementation of the Minsk agreements until December 31. It was decided during the meeting of the European Council on March 19-20.

The decision on economic sanctions against Russia because of the annexation of Crimea and destabilization of the situation in the east of Ukraine was adopted on June 31, 2014. The sanctions were tightened on September 8, 2014.
