The European Parliament called on the European Commission to work on comprehensive EU strategy for the Black Sea region as soon as possible, Joinfo.ua reports referring to Polskie Radio.
The resolution of the European Parliament says that after Russia took Crimea without encumbrance, the situation in the region has become dangerous and unstable. The document expresses concern about the concentration of the Russian army in the Black Sea region and plans for the development and modernization of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
The authors of the resolution also draw attention to the growing number of the Russian troops in the occupied regions of Georgia: Abkhazia and South Ossetia and condemns Moscow for supporting separatists in Ukraine.
MEPs point out that Russia's aggressive actions indicate a return to the ideology of hostile blocks. Thus, there has appeared disparity and imbalance that should be eradicated immediately. "The European Parliament stresses that NATO should maintain its common naval and air advantage in the Black Sea basin and to provide opportunities for the control and surveillance of the region," the resolution states.
