Pope Francis urged the Russian President Vladimir Putin to make a "sincere and great effort" to achieve peace in the Donbas, reads the statement of the Vatican after the meeting of the Pope and Putin, Joinfo.ua reports.
It is reported that the closed meeting lasted about 50 minutes, afterwards the leaders exchanged gifts. So, the Pope gave Putin an "Angel of peace" medallion, calling for solidarity with the international community on the issue of peace achieving.
"Sincere and great efforts are needed to achieve peace, it is important to restore the atmosphere of dialogue and all parties must execute their agreements within the framework of the Minsk accords," Pope Francis said.
The head of the Catholic Church called on Putin to promote resolution of the "grave humanitarian situation" in the Donbas and allow aid into the conflict areas.
The Reuters news agency has noticed that the epithet "cordial", which is used in virtually every Vatican statement about the Pope's meetings with the world leaders, did not appear this time.
