Merkel gets tough on Peskov

The German government reacted harshly to the statement by the Kremlin, which claimed that in an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine, Chancellor Angela Merkel had used the word "annexation" in relation to Crimea, according to Joinfo.ua.

Cabinet spokesman Steffen Seibert commented on today's statement by Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the President of Russia, who said that Merkel "made a terminological error, using the word "annexation" instead of "joining".

"It is clear that there is no reason to consider this event differently than we has done since the spring of 2014: it is annexation, which violates international law," said the official representative of the German government.

Seibert said that he was not going to officially comment on the statements of Peskov, since he did not know in what context they had been made.
