This was reported by Sergey Shoygu, the head of the Russian Ministry of Defense, at a meeting of the Ministry, Joinfo.ua reports.
Thus, Russia has stepped up its presence on Kotelny Island, Wrangel Island, Alexandra Land, on the archipelagos of Severnaya Zemlya and Novaya Zemlya, as well as on Mys Schmidta. Shoygu reported that the first stage facilities designed for deployment of military of the contract service and putting radar formations and air direction centers on alert have already been put into operation on some of these locations in 2014.
"Currently, in the Arctic zone we are creating the most modern and extensive illumination system," said Admiral Vladimir Korolev, the Commander of the Northern Fleet.
In mid-May, the Russian authorities decided to allocate more than 205 million rubles for resumption of research expeditions in the Arctic.
Previously, it was reported that the Russian Federation was planning to establish strong and modern nuclear fleet at the North Pole by 2020.
