Merkel believes that the return to the format of Great Eight with the participation of Russia is impossible as long as the Russian Federation does not act in accordance with international law, Joinfo.ua reports referring to BBC.
According to her, G7 is a community of shared values, including democracy and the rule of law, and Russia's actions in Ukraine do not correspond to these values. "The development of events in Ukraine is the reason why we are meeting in Ellmau as the Great Seven and not the Great Eight," Merkel explained.
In addition, she noted that the program of the Eastern Partnership is not directed against the Russian Federation and "is not an instrument of EU expansion." The politician stressed that the program "is directed against no-one, especially not against Russia."
At the same time, she noted that each Partner State has the right to decide on closer ties with various formations. "No-one has the right to block this decision for them," the Chancellor said.
It should be recalled that the Eastern Partnership summit will be held in Riga on May 21-22. The EU leaders and representatives of the six former Soviet countries are already gathering in Latvia.
