Elections in the Donbas are possible only after the full cease-fire and withdrawal of heavy weapons. It was stated by Alexander Hug, Deputy Chief Monitor of the OSCE SMM, during a press conference in Kyiv.

Hug said that the Minsk agreements also provided for the holding of elections in the Donbas. However, the OSCE Mission says it will be possible only in case of stabilization of situation, full cease-fire and withdrawal of heavy weapons, Joinfo.ua reports.

According to Hug, the OSCE Mission stands ready to assist in the preparation of elections. "When the provisions of the 1, 2, 3 Minsk agreements on withdrawal of heavy weapons and implementation of the ceasefire regime are fulfilled, then the situation can be stabilized, and we can talk about the preparations for implementation of other activities under the Minsk agreements," he said.

It should be recalled that the OSCE Mission stated that neither the Ukrainian government nor the rebels had completed the withdrawal of heavy weapons, provided by the Minsk agreements.

Earlier, after the meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the elections in the Donbas should help Kyiv to maintain control over the Ukrainian-Russian border.
