According to the Ministry of Defence of Lithuania, 'Baltic Fortress – 2015' exercises will be being held in the territorial waters of the country until May 14, Joinfo.ua reports.
The maneuvers involve 20 warships, as well as the Lithuanian-German team of divers and two planes of the Air Forces of Lithuania. The Defense Ministry stresses that the participants of the maneuvers have to work out the problem of interaction with NATO partners in carrying out international operations, including interactions with rapid reaction forces of the alliance. These problems should be solved in the course of maneuvering, shooting, mine lifting, interception, vessel convoy, and implementation of search and rescue operations.
The exercises are attended by the ships from Belgium, the UK, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland and Estonia, as well as the Lithuanian-German team of divers and two planes of the Air Forces of Lithuania.
The Baltic countries conduct the Baltic Fortress exercises every year alternately changing the organizers. Previously the scale of the maneuvers had been limited to vessels of the Baltic Naval Squadron BALTRON inaugurated in 1998.
In April, Lithuania hosted international NATO maneuvers "Fire Thunder" with the participation of self-propelled 155 mm howitzers Paladin M109A6 of the U.S. forces.
It should be recalled that on May 4 in the North Sea were conducted NATO sub-hunting exercises.
