To save power Putin needs to freeze conflict in Donbas

Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the head of the public organization "Open Russia", believes that the West should not conclude any long-term agreements with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the Ukrainian conflict.

According to Khodorkovsky, Western hopes for compromise with Putin are rather illusive, as the Russian government behaves unpredictably, Joinfo.ua reports with reference to DW.

"If someone in the West argues that it is possible to achieve long-term agreements with the current regime in the Kremlin, he is either a fool or a liar," said Khodorkovsky.

Khodorkovsky does not believe that the conflict in Ukraine will be resolved in the near future. According to him, Putin will do everything so that the Russian citizens fighting in the east of Ukraine stay there as long as possible, because their return is a danger to his regime. However, according to Khodorkovsky, the separatists will not take control over the new areas. He notes that in order to stay in power, Putin needs not escalation of the conflict, but its freezing.

Another priority of Putin, according to Khodorkovsky, is a failure of democratic reforms in Ukraine. Otherwise the success of the Kyiv authorities could serve as an example for Russia.

Khodorkovsky also says that peaceful change of power in Russia is impossible. "Regime change will not happen bloodlessly," he said. He believes that thousands of people in Russia already understand that they will have to take the consequences.

It should be recalled that UN Secretary-General believes that the situation in Ukraine is developing in the direction of creating a frozen conflict, and, in his opinion, the fact that the conflict can be resolved by arms, is an illusion.
