The last opinion poll showed that most residents of France and Germany believe that the U.S. troops played the main role in the liberation of Europe from fascism. It is indicated by the data of the survey conducted by the British agency ICM Research, Joinfo.ua reports.
Citizens of France and Germany – 61% and 52%, respectively – have recognized the key value of the U.S. Army in the victory over the Third Reich. In the UK, people agree with this only by 16%. Almost a half (46%) of UK respondents believe that the UK Army played the main role in the battles. In general, the recognition of the merits of the U.S. Army has the highest result – 43% of all participants in the poll in the UK, France and Germany believe so.
Respondents were asked to choose an answer to the question about the role in the victory over fascism in Europe (the army of Britain, the USSR, the USA, "others", and "hard to answer"). Only 13% of respondents recognized the role of the Soviet troops as the main one in the liberation of Europe. At the same time, only 17% Germans preferred the Red Army. 8% French citizens and 13% people from the UK share this opinion.
Only 2-3% of respondents in each country said some other armed forces played a key role in the liberation of Europe.
The survey was conducted from March 20 to April 9, 2015 in the UK, France and Germany. The selection consisted of 3,000 people (1,000 people from each country) of different age, gender, living in different regions of these countries.
