Steinmeier warns Putin of consequences of recognizing DPR and LPR

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier says that recognition of the DPR and LPR is inappropriate and calls on Russia to respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine. He stated it yesterday in the air of the German TV channel ARD, Joinfo.ua reports.

He believes that possible Russia's recognition of the occupied regions of the Donbas as independent states will "extremely complicate the peace process" in eastern Ukraine. Foreign Minister Steinmeier said this commenting on the statement of Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding official status of the self-proclaimed DPR and LPR.

In an interview for the Vesti v Subbotu program with Sergei Brilev, Russian leader Vladimir Putin declined to comment on the recognition of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, saying that his words could be perceived "counterproductive."

Earlier, in an interview with Russian television channel, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Igor Plotnitsky and Alexander Zakharchenko, the leaders of the LPR and DPR, were recognized worldwide after the Minsk Agreement was signed. At the same time, Russia itself does not hurry to recognize the occupied territories of the Donbas as independent state formations.
