The Lithuanian authorities explained their decision by the fact they were waiting for a decision on the part of Ukraine to create the conditions for refugees from the Donbas and Crimea, Joinfo.ua reports with reference to Delfi.lt.

"If it is stated that, in fact, these people have a real opportunity to move and settle in other regions of Ukraine in order to be more secure, it will inevitably affect the decision on provision of asylum to the citizens of Ukraine escaping hostilities," said Victor Ostrovnoy, the head of the Division on Asylum Affairs of the Migration Department.

According to the publication, last year, due to the fighting in the Donbas, the number of Ukrainians, who wanted to seek asylum in Lithuania had significantly increased. 70 Ukrainian citizens against five people in the past made such a request.

Last year, 31 Ukrainians received additional protection. Most Ukrainians ask to provide them with shelter, to escape the threat of war in their homeland.

It should be recalled that refugees from Crimea, who last year ran from the peninsula to Poland, have not received refugee status.
