Violation of media freedom: European Union defines ATR channel shutdown

According to Joinfo.ua, the press secretary of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy called on for immediate restoration of broadcasting rights of the ATR TV channel and respect for fundamental rights and freedoms of the inhabitants of the peninsula.

"After a search of the office of the Crimean Tatar channel ATR and attacks on its journalists, ATR was taken off the air. Other media services of the Crimean Tatars were forced to shut down too. This is a flagrant violation of the right to freedom of expression and a part of a wider system of harassment and intimidation of the Crimean Tatar community.

Crimean people deserve unhindered access to a variety of media. We call for the immediate resumption of the rights to broadcast the TV channel ATR and full respect for fundamental rights and freedoms of all people in Crimea," said the statement.

Speaker of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Yevhen Perebiynis considers the shutdown of the Crimean Tatar channel as Russia's revenge on the Crimean Tatars for their fundamental rejection of illegal occupation of the peninsula by Russia.

It should be recalled that ATR was a Crimean TV Channel whose target were the Crimean Tatars. April 1, 2015 it was forced to shut down after "failing to register under Russian law".
