Bundestag to hold referendum in Kaliningrad on its secession from Russia

Nationalist Party of Germany has made a proposal to the Bundestag to hold a referendum on secession of Kaliningrad from the Russian Federation and its accession to Germany.

Nationalist Party of Germany headed by MEP Udo Voigt, has made a proposal to the Bundestag to hold a referendum on secession of Kaliningrad from the Russian Federation and its accession to Germany, Joinfo.ua reports.

"The issue of the return of the Kaliningrad region to Germany has long been discussed in the government circles of Germany. It is our historical territory. It is a unique territory, which simply rots under the government of the Kaliningrad region. Such a legacy of German science, as Immanuel Kant, remained in the region. His house is in ruins. The city is filled with the ruins of hundreds of architectural monuments, which are not restored," said Voigt, adding that the remains of tens of thousands of dead Germans were also in the Kaliningrad region.

MP believes that "renaming of glorious Konigsberg into Kaliningrad has not destroyed its historic ties with Germany."

"From a legal point of view, the referendum does not violate international law. This is only an expression of the will of the people living in the region," Voigt explained.

He added that the government of Germany has already announced that they were ready to give German passports to all residents of the Kaliningrad region.
