EU does not have common position regarding sanctions against Russia

Although today the members of the Union formally extended new sanctions against Russia for another six months, in EU there is no common position.

Among the EU countries there is no unanimity on the subject of whether to extend the new sanctions against Russia or not. It was stated by one of the eurodiplomats, Joinfo.ua reports.

EU restrictions expire in July. According to the diplomat, who wanted to remain anonymous, most members of the Community probably believe that the discussion on their extension can wait.

The following week, the leaders of the Union will discuss the steps of the EU in regard to Russia. Today, there were formally extended visa and financial sanctions of the EU for another 6 months because of the conflict in Ukraine.

The restrictions include freezing of bank accounts in Europe and the prohibition of entry into the countries of the Union for certain persons involved in aggression.

Restrictions against 150 people and 37 companies will be valid until September 15, 2015. The decision adopted at the January meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels took effect today.
