The Swedish Government intends to allocate additional 6.2 billion kronor for the Swedish defense in the period from 2016 to 2020. It was stated by the Swedish Minister of Finance Magdalena Andersson and Minister of Defense Peter Hultqvist, Joinfo.ua reports with reference to the Swedish radio.
The Ministers said that the money would be spent on effectivization of fight against violations of the Swedish maritime borders by foreign underwater objects and strengthening of defense of the Gotland Island. "Gotland has a strategic location in the Baltic Sea and this is also an indication to the outside world that we recognize that Gotland is very important. Everything we do is a part of underlining Swedish sovereignty," said Hultqvist.
As it is known, Gotland has been a practically demilitarized zone since 2005, and now the government gives the opportunity to place a Moto-mechanized unit of 130 people on the island.
