UK suspects that Russia is still the biggest threat to its security

Russia may become the biggest threat to the security of the UK again. It was stated by Foreign Minister Philip Hammond in his speech to the Royal United Institute for Defense Studies.

UK suspects that Russia is still the biggest threat to its security

"We are in familiar territory for anyone over the age of about 50, with Russia's behavior a stark reminder that it has the potential to pose the single greatest threat to our security," said Hammond, Joinfo.ua reports with reference to Reuters.

The Minister also noted the importance of gathering intelligence on Russia in the near future. He said that the intelligence agencies of Britain began to recruit Russian-speaking staff.

Hammond also believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not going to join the international system of rules aimed at preserving peace between nations, but rather undermines the system. "The actions of President Putin – illegal annexation of Crimea, and now the use of Russian forces for destabilization of situation in the east of Ukraine – undermine ground security of sovereign nations of Eastern Europe," the Minister added.

Earlier, Hammond said that there were no changes in the strategic intentions of Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding Ukraine. "There has been a reduction in violence since the new agreement was signed but I don't detect that Mr Putin's strategic intentions have changed. This is just a question now about what tools he uses to achieve those objectives," said Hammond.
