According to the foreign media, President Barack Obama rejected the idea of lethal weapons supplies to Ukraine after the talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. It was stated by the German ambassador in Washington Peter Wittig, Joinfo.ua reports with reference to Associated Press.
"The two leaders exchanged views on that issue and there was unity by them not to impose, or not to go forward with, the delivery of lethal defensive weapons at this time," said Wittig.
Last month in Washington, Angela Merkel and Barack Obama came to the conclusion that the conflict in the Donbas had to be settled peacefully. Back then Obama said he did not made a final decision regarding lethal weapons supplies to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
German authorities have consistently opposed arms supplies to Ukraine, saying that it will only exacerbate the conflict. But American politicians and experts advocate the transfer of weapons to Ukraine, noting that only force will stop Russian aggression.
It should be recalled that earlier, during her visit to Japan, German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke for extension of sanctions against Russia, but at the same time she noted the need to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
