Merkel added that Russia does not respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine, including through the support for separatists in the Donbas. She added that the international security architecture was threatened.

In his turn, Abe noted that the G7 countries and Russia were not able to carry on a meaningful conversation. The Japanese prime minister warned that the conflict in Ukraine was not a regional but a global problem.

The heads of government of Germany and Japan indicated that they relied on a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Ukraine. In addition, the Japanese prime minister agreed with the German Chancellor that it is necessary to force Russia to play a constructive role in achieving "peaceful and diplomatic solution" in Ukraine.
