According to Deputy Government Spokesperson for the federal Government Christiane Wirtz, Angela Merkel believes that Europe must deepen military cooperation, Joinfo.ua reports referring to the DPA agency.
However, Wirtz said that Merkel called the prospect of creating a common European army a project of the future.
The idea of creating an army was supported by the German Defense Minister Ursula von der Lyayen and the head of the German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier. However, the German opposition criticized Juncker's proposal, saying that it is stacked against Russia.
It should be recalled that on the eve of March 8, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that the European Union should create its own common army as a tool to promote the interests of Europe.
