The European Union began to seriously discuss the idea of creating its own army. Following the statements by the Minister of Defence of Germany, Jean-Claude Juncker, the head of the European Commission, called on for creation of a European army, Joinfo.ua reports with refrence to Welt am Sonntag.
According to Juncker, Europe and its own army will be able to confidently respond to the threat both in the EU and in neighboring countries.
"You would not create a European army to use it immediately," Juncker said. However, he is confident that pan-European army "would convey to Russia that we are serious about defending the values of the European Union."
President European Commission stressed the symbolic importance of the project. "Pan-European army will show the world there will never be war between the EU countries," said Juncker. According to him, there will be no competition with NATO, with the help of army Europe will just be able to take more responsibility for what happens. "Europe has recently considerably lost prestige — European Commission President criticizes the current state of affairs — even in foreign policy we are no longer taken seriously," Juncker emphasizes.
Among other things, the head of the European Commission believes that the army will give organizational and financial benefits. Thus, there will established cooperation in the development and acquisition of modern weapons systems that will help to save money.
