Former President and Commissioner for negotiations for peaceful settlement of the conflict in the Donbas Leonid Kuchma said that Putin set an ultimatum to Ukraine: to stop resistance or lose statehood, Joinfo.ua reports with reference to the parliamentary newspaper Voice of Ukraine.
According to Kuchma, the Ukrainian side was given an ultimatum by Russia. "Russian President acted as if there were no agreements in Minsk. We are actually given an ultimatum. Either we accept his conditions and stop any resistance, or stop existing as an independent state. He made it clear that he would not crane at any losses and costs in achieving his goal, and his goal is now clear as day," the former president said.
Kuchma believes that this ultimatum is given not only to Ukraine, but to the entire Western world. Kuchma says that geographically and historically Ukraine is located in Europe.
"Our people just like European values. We like to live as the Europeans. We regret that our path to Europe is so long, tortuous, and painful," he added.
