Prime Minister of Poland Ewa Kopacz recalled that she spoke for new sanctions against Russia during the last meeting of the European Council. In her opinion, a fragile truce in Ukraine is a great challenge for the European Union, Joinfo.ua reports referring to the Polish media.

"During the last meeting of the European Council, I was one of the few persons who called on the European Commission to be ready for the introduction of economic sanctions, that is the next stage of sanctions if the truce is not be implemented," Kopacz said.

Meanwhile, on Monday, European Council President Donald Tusk began conducting consultations concerning acute restrictions in relation to Moscow. On Sunday, in Kyiv Donald Tusk said that first of all economic sanctions were needed to be strengthened. If the EU decides to sharpen restrictions, the decision in this case can be made during the EU summit in March.

President of the European Council did not rule out that the EU would send a police mission to Ukraine to monitor compliance with the terms of the armistice and the Russian-Ukrainian border.
