German President to arrive in Kyiv on anniversary of Maidan

The head of the German state will come to the capital of Ukraine at the request of the federal government to commemorate the anniversary of the Maidan and to support the democratic movement of the country.

German President Joachim Gauck will arrive in Kyiv to participate in events dedicated to the anniversary of the Maidan to be held on Sunday, February 22, DW news agency reports.

At the invitation of President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, Joachim Gauck along with other heads of state and government will attend the celebrations dedicated to the anniversary of protests in the Ukrainian capital, which will be a manifestation of solidarity with the Ukrainian democracy movement. It was reported in a public statement of the Office of the German President on Friday, February 20.

Gauck will come to Kyiv at the request of the federal government, other members of the leadership and the members of the cabinet will not take part in the event, explained the deputy government spokesperson Christine Wirtz.
